And, while being in the hospital a person is very unlikely to get outdoors in the sunshine
UVB (vitamin D) from lamps and the sun
UVB lamp produced 8X as much vitamin D as same intensity from the sun - July 2012
Perhaps the 8X more vitamin D was due to the greatly reduced level of UVA
Sperti UVB lamp is the only one which the FDA has approved for generation of Vitamin D
At $425, it is about 1/5 the cost of a tanning bed, but 20X the cost of vitamin D supplements for 5 years
Note: Sperti has about 100X less UVA than the sun or tanning beds - so it MAY produce a lot of vitamin D per minute of exposure
