Dr. Meis Moukayed
Qualifications: B.Sc. (Honours) Medical Biochemistry, Ph.D. (Cantab.) Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Position: Associate Professor of Natural Sciences, American University in Dubai.
Dr. Meis Moukayed earned her BSc in Medical Biochemistry from Brunel University and her PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Cambridge, both in the United Kingdom. She is a clinical scientist and banks several years of experience gained in the health, science and education sectors, having trained at leading research institutions including Cambridge University and Oxford University, U.K.
Dr. Moukayed, a qualified stem cell biologist and a molecular biologist, has also worked in translational medicine for the U.K.’s National Health Service. Her areas of research include stem cell biology, transcription factor regulation, cancer biology, the metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and hypoxic regulation.
Dr. Moukayed is a member of several international societies including Cambridge Philosophical Society, the Biochemical Society and The Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.
The Molecular Mechanisms Involved in Vitamin D Action
Cholecalciferol, 1 D, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 , is a biologically important molecule for the physiological functions of several target tissues in the human body.
In this presentation, the production, metabolism and mechanisms of action of 1 D, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 will be discussed.
The genomic mechanisms of 1 D, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 action via the Vitamin D receptor (VDR) and non-genomic mechanisms of action will be explained.
The molecular cross talk between 1 D, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 signalling pathways and that of other growth factors or hormones will be discussed
to elucidate the central involvement of 1 D, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 in regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and cell survival.
